Domain knowledge.
Guided execution. Independent completion.

Compare what a model knows, how it performs with a plan, and what it completes on its own. Follow that profile through pretraining, midtraining, instruction tuning, and later post-training.

NNTP archive recovery

Recover the missing part, reconstruct the archive, and return files that match the reference. Inspect every step of the run.

The objective: reconstruct a station-data archive from two local NNTP spools. The supplied catalog is out of order and repeats one Message-ID. Return the archive and an integrity report; preserve the original bytes.

01Read the catalog, establish identity.

Deduplicate by Message-ID, then order the parts using the manifest’s part numbers. Subject lines are descriptive; they do not define identity or assembly order.

Catalog entries 13
Unique Message-IDs 12
Ordered parts 01…12
Duplicate removed <margin.014.07@demo.invalid>
02Resolve the missing article.

The primary spool returns 430 for part 07. Request that same Message-ID from the supplied mirror. Keep a record of both responses.

primary › ARTICLE <margin.014.07@demo.invalid>
430 no such article

mirror › ARTICLE <margin.014.07@demo.invalid>
220 0 <margin.014.07@demo.invalid> article follows
03Decode, order, reconstruct.

Remove NNTP dot-stuffing, parse the article, and decode its declared MIME base64 payload. Check each part’s length and SHA-256 before concatenating the twelve parts in manifest order.

Part hashes matched 12 / 12
Archive size 40,960 bytes
Archive SHA-256 matches the reference
Output station-archive.tar
04Verify the contents, not just the container.

Open the TAR in memory. Require exactly the 24 expected regular files, then compare every file’s SHA-256 with the reference manifest. A readable archive alone is insufficient.

Expected regular files 24
Observed regular files 24
File hashes matched 24 / 24
Unexpected files 0

Evaluation conditions

Test domain knowledge, execution with a supplied plan, and independent task completion. Each condition exposes a different part of the model’s performance in the same domain.

Explore an evaluation condition

What knowledge does it bring?

Probe the reasoning behind the work: how article identity, transfer encoding, multipart order, and server responses affect retrieval and reconstruction.

Input: domain problems · Output: answers assessed with a domain rubric

  • Explain how to retrieve a part absent from one spool.
  • Account for duplicate and out-of-order catalog entries.
  • Describe how the declared encoding changes decoding.
  • Choose checks that establish a complete recovery.

Can it execute a valid plan?

Give the model the four-step recovery plan and access to the task environment. It must issue requests, handle the missing article, reconstruct the archive, and return the files.

Input: objective + plan + tools · Output: completed artifact + action trace

  • Retrieve the unique parts from the supplied spools.
  • Decode and assemble the parts in the required order.
  • Produce the archive and an integrity report.
  • Grade against the same outcome checks as an unaided run.

Can it reach the objective unaided?

“Recover the archive from these servers.” Supply the catalog, endpoints, and tools. The model has to work out the retrieval and recovery procedure and deliver the final artifact.

Input: objective + environment · Output: completed artifact + action trace

  • Choose and carry out the retrieval strategy.
  • Recover from the missing primary article.
  • Return the exact archive and expected file set.
  • Finish within the declared tool and time budget.

Training-stage comparisons

Compare DegenBench profiles within a model family—from pretrained and midtrained checkpoints through instruction tuning and later post-training. See where knowledge, execution, and independent completion change.

Explore observability by training stage

The pretrained profile.

Establish the model’s domain profile at the base checkpoint. Test knowledge and execution using a checkpoint-appropriate prompt format and documented tool interface.

Run settings

Checkpoint identifier, completion format, elicitation method, tool adapter, and budget. Unsupported conditions are marked unavailable.

The midtrained profile.

Measure the available continued-training checkpoint on the same task families. Compare the profile with earlier checkpoints in its lineage.

Training context

Record the producer’s training-stage definition and documented changes in data, compute, and architecture alongside the run settings.

The instruction-tuned profile.

Run the instruction-tuned checkpoint with its documented template. Track changes in domain answers, guided execution, and independent completion.

Matched conditions

Align task variants, tool access, budgets, and output checks. Preserve the checkpoint’s actual position in the training lineage.

The post-trained profile.

Evaluate later checkpoints, including documented preference and reinforcement-learning stages. Compare completion rates and failure patterns across the lineage.

Interpreting changes

Report observed performance differences with their run conditions. Claims about the effect of a training intervention require a controlled comparison.

The hosted profile.

Evaluate the model through its exposed API. Keep the provider, model identifier, date, settings, tool access, and limits attached to the result.

Endpoint metadata

Hosted scores describe the available service. Internal training stages are included only when the corresponding checkpoints are accessible.

Compare like with like. Task family, evaluation condition, and checkpoint define each comparison. Results carry their run configuration, denominators, and uncertainty.

Checkpoint access sets the scope. Compare training stages where checkpoints are available. Treat hosted providers as endpoint observations.

Scoring and verification

Every task starts with a defined objective and an assessment. The action trace, intermediate artifacts, and final output make the result inspectable.

Task completion

Check the recovered files, run the reconstructed routine, or exercise the restored service. Conversation tasks pair completion checks with a declared rubric and independent ratings. Keep overall completion, component measures, and judgment-based assessments distinct.

Matched conditions

Record checkpoint lineage, prompt format, tools, environment version, resource limits, sampling settings, and guidance. Use equivalent held-out variants across conditions. Mark unavailable comparisons explicitly.

Evidence per run

Keep tool calls, retries, failures, intermediate outputs, and the final artifact. Attach the verifier output or rating rubric, run configuration, and budget. Report denominators and uncertainty with aggregate results.

Replaying the example

The downloadable NNTP example opens two local spools, retrieves MIME base64 articles, reconstructs the archive, and checks every file. The example covers retrieval and reconstruction; it does not exercise yEnc, PAR2, authentication, or TLS.
